Things you need to stop doing with wet hair

The summer is coming which means our hair gets wet much more often than usual. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair, which is why it's important to handle it with care to avoid damage. These are the things you should avoid doing with wet hair to maintain healthy, split end-free strands.

Things you need to stop doing with wet hair

Why wet hair is more prone to damage and breakage?

When hair is wet, it absorbs water and swells. This causes the hair shaft to become more porous, which makes it easier for water to penetrate the hair and cause damage. Wet hair is also more prone to stretching, which can cause the hair to break or split.

Another factor that contributes to wet hair damage is the pH of water. Tap water has a pH of around 7, which is slightly alkaline. Hair, on the other hand, has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5 to 5.5. When hair comes into contact with alkaline water, it can cause the hair cuticle to lift and become more vulnerable to damage.

5 common wet hair mistakes to avoid

1. Brushing or combing aggressively

Wet hair is more prone to breakage , so it's important to use a wide-tooth comb or a brush with flexible bristles to detangle your hair gently. Start at the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling your hair. If you encounter a particularly stubborn knot, try using your fingers to loosen it first.

One product that can smoothen the detangling process is a leave-in conditioner, like our Honey Infused Leave-in Conditioner. This will help smooth your locks, preparing them for detangling with a brush or wide-tooth comb. The Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner can be applied to towel-dried hair. Spray the product from an arm's length distance onto the mid-lengths of your hair down to the ends, combing through to ensure it is evenly dispersed.

You can also opt for Honey Infused Hair Oil before detangling. This luxurious hair oil is enriched with sustainably-sourced Mirsalehi Honey from our very own Mirsalehi Bee Garden, formulated to rebuild and repair hair to the core. Since this product is multi-purpose, it can be used as a pre-styling as well as a finishing product, as an addition to a hair mask and as an overnight treatment.

2. Using a regular towel to dry your hair

Regular towels can be rough on wet hair and cause damage to the hair cuticle. Instead, use a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to squeeze out excess water gently. Microfiber towels are particularly effective at absorbing moisture without causing friction, which can help prevent breakage and frizz.

3. Blow drying on high heat

High heat can damage wet hair, so it's important to use a low-heat setting or let your hair air dry instead. If you must use a blow dryer, hold it at least at an arm's length distance from your hair and use a diffuser attachment to distribute the heat evenly. To prevent any heat damage and protect your hair from UV, spritz Gisou Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray which contains propolis rich in vitamins, minerals and flavonoids to protect hair and keep it healthy. For the best result, section hair and mist evenly from an arm’s length distance onto dry or damp hair before applying any heat tools or exposing hair to UV. Always make sure your hair is dry before using heated styling tools such as curling irons and straighteners.

4. Sleeping with wet hair

Sleeping with wet hair can cause damage to your hair strands. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair, and the friction between your hair and your pillowcase can cause breakage and split ends. It's best to allow your hair to air dry completely before going to bed or to use a low-heat setting on your hair dryer to dry your hair first.

However, if you still choose to sleep with the wet hair, take the advantage to deeply nourish it by applying our deeply nourishing overnight mask. Add a few drops of the Honey Infused Hair Oil to the Honey Infused Hair Mask to create a special treatment for your damaged locks. After applying this mixture to your damp hair, leave it overnight by covering your hair with satin or silk bonnet.

5. Pulling your wet hair back tightly

Wet hair is more prone to breakage, so avoid pulling it back tightly into a ponytail or bun. Use a loose hair tie or clip instead of a tight one. If you must tie your hair back, make sure it's completely dry first, and use a soft, fabric hair tie to avoid damaging your hair.

To easily create the famous sleek ponytail without pulling your hair too much, use our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer. The Polishing Primer will smooth your hair and make it more manageable while providing workable hold. It will also help to shield your hair from humidity, preventing frizz throughout the day.

To use, place one to two pea-sized amounts of hair primer into the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to warm up the product and activate the ingredients. Distribute the product evenly throughout your damp hair from root to tip using your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
